Marvel Shares First Teaser For The Fantastic Four: First Steps
Marvel’s first family returns home in the first look at The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The teaser trailer, which debuted at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in front of the Saturn 5 rocket, showcases Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm. The casting for this highly anticipated film was a trying time for Marvel fans, as there hasn’t been a Fantastic Four film that’s gotten the story exactly right yet. However, this new iteration shows promise for the superhero family as they embark on their Marvel Cinematic Universe homecoming.
The trailer quickly sets a unique tone with the 1960’s retrofuturistic world we’ll meet the heroes in. Pascal is heard narrating the majority of the trailer as Reed Richards seems to sell that he and his friends are the “perfect family” in spite of their abilities. It is even hinted that fans will get to see the infamous journey that gave the team their abilities. Hilariously, Moss-Bachrach’s character The Thing is seen cooking in a kitchen, which calls to mind Moss-Bachrach’s iconic role in The Bear.
It does a tremendous job of putting audiences at ease with the overall style and special effects needed to make this a successful Fantastic Four film. I’d argue that this is the most accurate depiction of The Thing. He looks real, instead of like a CGI character. Quinn and Kirby surprisingly pass as siblings with their bright blonde hair, while Pascal’s Reed Richards channels the leadership and genius reminiscent of Tony Stark. The romance is prevalent between Reed and Sue, which is a pivotal part of their characters. Kirby offers us so much heart and grace within only mere seconds of speaking in this trailer as Sue Storm.
The teaser also gave us a look at the team’s first villain Galactus, played by Ralph Ineson, and John Malkovichm who is playing an undisclosed role. Julia Garner, Natasha Lyonne, Paul Walter Hauser, and Sarah Niles also round out the cast. The film is directed by Matt Shakman, who is no stranger to the retro world after bringing WandaVision to our screens.
That being said, we have full confidence in Shakman’s iteration of Marvel’s first family and can’t wait to see this film when it hits theaters July 25.
