Eva Birthistle and Anne-Marie Duff On The Long Awaited Return Of Bad Sisters
The hit Apple TV+ show Bad Sisters has finally returned for its second season and fans are loving every second of it. The Garvey sisters are back, facing a new set of problems following the “accidental death” of Grace’s abusive husband. Pop Culture Planet’s Ally Bonsall spoke with Eva Birthistle and Anne-Marie Duff about the long-awaited return of the drama series.
After the death of her husband, Grace is finally in a good place. However, Duff, who plays Grace, shared that while things might be looking up for her character now, they will soon spiral once again. “Everything seems like good times for Grace, finally!” she explained. “But, dot, dot, dot.” With a new fiancé in her life, could Grace's abusive husband still be causing trouble from beyond the grave? While the sisters have moved on from the events of last season, Duff hinted that the past might not be done haunting the Garvey sisters just yet.
Meanwhile Birthistle’s character Ursula is simply trying to survive in season two. With a fresh divorce, financial troubles, and three kids to feed, she has moved back into the Garvey family home. “The last couple of years have started to take their toll and she feels like she’s not managing as well as the other sisters,” she told me. “As a result, she feels out on this limb, feeling sort of lost.”
There is a genuine sisterly bond among the actresses that elevates their on-screen relationships. Duff and Birthistle shared a beloved memory from the set while filming season two. During Grace’s wedding scene, director Dearbhla Walsh gave a heartfelt speech about the importance of family, sisterhood, and cherished connections. “Then we just played the wedding as if it was a real wedding,” Duff said about that filming day. “It was very powerful.”
The actresses shared a laugh about filming the wedding sequence when a hurricane unexpectedly messed with their filming schedule. Nevertheless, the show must go on! Birthistle shared that a favorite memory of hers is “Anne-Marie in her wedding dress. [She’s] pinned up at the end wearing a big pair of Wellington boots in this amazing beautiful wedding dress.”
Their hopes for season two are the return of the camaraderie among fans that began during season one. “There was such an amazing response after season one, and it really brought people together,” expressed Birthistle about her gratitude for the love the show received, while Duff added, “The audience came along for the ride in the first season. Let’s hope they really commit to this one because there are lots of loopty-loops.”
